The palace was built in 19th century and is notable for being the palace with the beautiful arched balconies and windows. The Emir of Bauchi’s palace was built by the famed Babban Gwani, real name Muhammadu Durugu; a 19th century master builder from Zaria. He built mosques and palaces in Kano, Katsina, Bauchi and Zaria and this magnificent edifice was built entirely with mud.
It was a fortress built with the intention of providing effective protection to the Emir and his officials. It has tall defence walls and designs that provide a large space for people during important state activities like Friday prayer or the Durbar.
